Should You Buy Frozen Fish For Your Family?

Are you thinking about buying frozen fish for your family?

Frozen fish

Many people think that buying frozen fish is unhealthy for you, when in reality, it’s actually better to buy fish frozen than to buy it in the store and try to freeze it yourself. Incorrect freezer storage can result in the fish’s proteins losing their natural structure. This affects the fish’s ability to hold proteins and moisture.

Buying frozen fish is also healthier for you because parasites and bacteria cannot survive the freezing process.

When a fish is frozen upon capture, it retains more of its freshness than a fish that is caught, transported and then frozen.

Here’s what to look out for when buying frozen fish in the supermarket.

* Avoid buying packages that are positioned above the ’frost line’ on top of the freezer case in the supermarket freezer.

* Frozen Fish should be free of ‘ice crystals’ and have no discoloration.

Here’s what to look out for when buying frozen fish online.

* Don’t accept the package if it’s torn or is crushed along the edges.

* There should be no signs of ice or frost inside the packaging. If you see these signs you’ll know that the fish has been stored too long or has been thawed out and refrozen.

* No frozen or thawed liquid should be present in the packaging.

* Fillets should have no evidence of drying out, white spots or any type of discoloration at all.

One of the most important checks to do when buying frozen fish in the supermarket, or online, is the smell check. If a fish smells anything other than salt water or ‘fishy’ then you should not eat it. If you smell ammonia that is a clear sign that the fish should not be eaten because spoiled fish can make you very sick.

Another item to consider when buying frozen fish is how far the frozen fish had to travel to you from the source. If you live more than 75 miles away from where the fish was caught you might want to think twice about buying it. The further away from the source you are, the greater the chance of food poisoning.

Cooking Healthy – It’s Easier Than You Think

Are you interested in cooking healthy meals for your family? You’re making a smart choice. This article will provide you with several tips that you can use to start creating healthier meals for your family.

Healthy Eating Pyramid

One of the misconceptions about cooking healthy that almost everyone I’ve talked with is cooking healthy is expensive and isn’t always affordable especially if your family lives on a budget like my family does.

Here are five tips to help you cook healthier and without breaking your budget.

Tip 1 – Spend at least one hour before your next trip to the super market and plan out meals for the next one to two weeks. Each meal should incorporate a fruit and a vegetable in it so everyone in your family meets a quota of having at least 4 fruits and 4 vegetables in their diet every day.

Your shopping cart should also include plenty of whole grains, fish, poultry and beans to round out a balanced diet for your family.

If you have questions about what foods make up a balanced, healthy diet you should download the food pyramid. Just go to Google, type in food pyramid and there are plenty of websites to download it from and also plenty of other healthy cooking ideas as well.

Tip 2 – Start baking and creating your own snacks instead of buying them. Most people learn how to bake when they are children but lose the interest in baking as they get older because it’s easier t to buy foods that are already pre-made. When you bake your own snacks you can avoid adding the sugars, preservatives, fats and other unhealthy ingredients that are found in store bought foods.

Baking doesn’t take a lot of time either and if you plan your meals right you can always have a supply of homemade healthy snacks whenever you want.

Tip 3 – Start grilling and broiling more. These methods both require direct exposure of food to heat and will allow fat to drip away from your food.

Tip 4 – Steaming – This is one of the healthiest ways to cook vegetables because only a small amount of nutrients are removed from the food compared to other forms of cooking.

Tip 5 – Start using herbs and spices. Many people don’t think about using herbs and spices when they cook other than just adding a little salt and pepper and they are missing out on a whole new world of flavor that can be added to their meals. If you don’t have any herbs and spices in your home you should invest in a basic spice rack because adding spices and herbs will add more flavor to your meals and also help to improve your families health as well.

When using herbs and spices in your meals you should always try and add bright colored herbs and spices last part of the cooking so you don’t overcook them and sap them of their important nutrients and flavors that they will add to your meal.

Don’t give up on the idea of cooking healthy. It just takes a little more effort but in the end it’s totally worth it.

Weekend In Malibu On A Budget

Are you interested in getting away next weekend but don’t know where to go? Why not visit Malibu, California?

Malibu is a beautiful, beachfront city in Western Los Angeles and has 27 miles of coastline, world class beaches, great parks and plenty of things to see and do in one weekend.

You might be thinking “can I visit Malibu on a budget?” and the answer is yes!

This article will provide you with affordable places to stay, things to do and places to eat to keep you busy during your weekend in Malibu.

Where to Stay

Where you stay in Malibu depends on your comfort level. If you want to stay in a hotel where you might bump into a celebrity or two you should stay at the Malibu Beach Inn. Prices here can run anywhere from $200.00 and up per night so be prepared to spend the money if you want a higher level of posh comfort.

If you just want to get away and don’t really care where you stay then you should check out the Malibu Motel, Casa Malibu Inn on the beach, Malibu Riviera Hotel or the Malibu Country Inn. Each of these motels offers affordable rates that run anywhere from $75.00 and up per night.

Things to Do

The first thing you should do on your weekend in Malibu is spend some time at the beach and with 27 miles of coastline you have a lot of beaches to choose from.

One of the beaches that I recommend is Zuma Beach. It’s much cleaner than Santa Monica or Venice and it’s also great for dolphin sightings and has plenty of parking. This beach is awesome for enjoying the water, relaxing and people watching.

After you visit Zuma Beach you should grab a bite to eat at Malibu Seafood. Here you can enjoy the best fresh fish in Southern California while the warm ocean breeze blows across your face.

Once you finish lunch at Malibu Seafood you should swing by Malibu Country Mart. Here you will find plenty of things to see and do like beautiful gardens, retail shops, sculptures, children’s playground and so much more. The Malibu Country Mart is also a place where you might bump into a celebrity or two while you enjoy a latte at the Starbucks across the street.

Another place that you should check out on your stay in Malibu is the historic Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum. At this great attraction you get to learn more about Malibu’s rich history while enjoying awesome views of the beach and coastline.

One of the most iconic spots that you should visit during your weekend in Malibu is the historic Malibu Pier.

Malibu Pier is a great spot and a place that anyone will recognize because many TV shows over the last 20 years have been filmed here. Be sure to bring your camera and take pictures while you’re visiting this iconic destination.

Places to Eat

Since you’re visiting Malibu you have a wide variety of places to eat, almost too many to choose from on one weekend so you’ll just have to come back for another weekend soon. Here are a few affordable restaurants that you should check out.

Something’s Fishy – This is a great Teppan Style Grill Restaurant that has awesome sushi, grilled fish, steak and chicken.

Duke’s Malibu – This restaurant is the perfect place for anyone who loves surfing because it’s dedicated to Duke Kahanamoku the father of surfing. Duke’s has plenty of seafood items on the menu that are made Hawaiian Style. Best of all Duke’s serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner so you have plenty of chances to eat here during your stay in Malibu.

Neptune’s Net – To satisfy your seafood cravings and also enjoy your favorite adult beverage you check out this restaurant. Neptune’s Net offers a wide variety of seafood items on the menu, sandwiches and great specials that you should check out.

Malibu is a great place to visit and also a destination that you will want to return to again and again for years to come.
